I’m losing about 2-3 lbs a week on this diet. Which is good. Now and again we go out, have a drink, try to be at least judicious in what we get. Then get back on the strict diet. Jane’s losing at about the same rate, a little slower, but losing. And we have done the whole Nutrisystem, Mediterranean, portion control, Atkins thing—Atkins was the best, but past a certain weight, it wasn’t working. So we got with this one.
Those of you who’ve been following this sage know the story: we do home-cooked South Beach, which is pretty simple in essence: you have, at each meal, a protein, as much as you want, and must-have 2 cups of non-starch veggies. At breakfast, this is a problem, but you can have v-8. Jane opts lately for green beans. For breakfast. But it works. You get two low-carb snacks, involving veggie plus cheese, peanut butter, hummus—but about a tablespoon or so. And you get a dessert after supper, with Splenda.
We end up cheating by skipping snacks, because we get busy. Or because we’ve had it with the veggies. BUT, we lose.
The program is supposed to include whole grain now, judiciously, maybe one piece of bread. You retreat back to strict induction if you gain a pound. We’ll see.
But yay us. By what I’ve told the program, I’ve lost 11 lbs, but I actually started heavier than I admitted, by 5 lbs. So it’s really about 16. I’ve dropped 2 points of Body Mass Index, and a full size of clothing. Jane’s right with me.
Between progress on the diet, progress on Intruder, and restarting skating, plus, plus, plus, you will be busy through until next spring. Do you have any indication from the publisher when the previous Bren book will actually be released?
Nevermind about the Betrayer question. I found the answer in the Foreigner Guidebook. How did I miss that?
>hummus—but about a tablespoon
You must be a saint. I’ve never managed to stop at a tablespoon. There is this cute, Middle Eastern hole-in-the-wall restaurant I order take out from and I think they believe I’m ordering for a family. Heh. If they only knew.(yes, I know I can make it myself for less cost, but it never tastes quite right and I am all for supporting local businesses)
No kidding! We’ve got a really good one we get from…heck if I know. CJ does all the shopping! 😀 (Lucky me!!!!) But since it appears as a glop on the plate with only a couple of sticks of celery, I can eat it and continue working. Getting up to get more is too much like cooking! 😀
This also works on the rare occasion that I actually have to go get it myself. Doling it out in the kitchen and retreating to office works wonders! By the time you’re tempted to get up for any other reason, it’s been long enough that the hunger pain is gone.
Whatever they’ve done for keepign that glycemic index on an even keel is really working.
Congrats, keep up the good work. Sticking to it over the holidays will be the fun part.
We’ve already mapped out our “holiday sins” and what goals we have to reach in order to indulge. The nice thing is, you think ahead without dwelling on what you’re not getting. That cheese based desert is absolutely the best part of this whole diet. I miss bread (badly) but I don’t THINK about bread constantly, which is a serious plus. On Atkins, I miss veggies, which we’re getting, and deserts, which the cheese-ice-cream takes care of.
As for Green Beans at BF…a whole lot better than the aches that come with V8’s Tomatoes! 😀
Congrats on the weight loss!
I love green beans and, as a kid, used to eat them whenever they were available (including at breakfast). My grandmother passed on her penchant for sliced fresh homegrown tomatoes for breakfast to me, too. These days, however, my breakfast is usually a green smoothie, which you might be interested in trying out.
Well, still doing well. Dipped down to the lowest I’ve been in 20 years. We are bound for sylph-dom. My nose is starting to twitch from all the rabbit food, but we’re not going to give up.
Congrats congrats! I love the low carb thing, having just spent 9 days in Sunny (chilly) CA Bay Area on “vacation” and managing not to gain an ounce. However, I’m pretty much weight stable and I lack the out and out discipline to do what you’re doing, it’s just too much work. Still, I admire your perseverance (will there Ever be a Foreigner book called “Perseverer…?”)!
Whose interpretation of Atkins leaves out veggies, I have to ask? I always thought of that version of low carb as Steak and Broccoli and Butter…
