I love snow. It’s particularly nice when I don’t have to drive in it—we’re well-stocked: I did my grocery run yesterday—but it’s just sifting down like fine powder. Not uncommon for us. They only forecast half an inch, but I think we’ve already got that.
Spokane is a hilly town. Our downtown is literally ‘down,’ so it, on the riverside, may not get as much as those of us who live on the heights, and we’re about middling. Our altitude is about 2000 feet here, and probably we’re about 2300 where we are. 2000 is the break-point for getting snow and getting rain, so it can be pretty fickle on some days. Mt Spokane is pushing 6000 feet absolute elevation—subtract 2000 for its base. It’s a skiing mountain, and boasts the first double chair lift ever built. Which seems to be what’s still there.
It used to have a huge shiny globe atop (in 1932) in honor of [fatherhood???] Yep. That’s what they say. But the thing disappeared, perhaps at the hand of somebody who likes mountains not to be defaced by large shiny globes: they’ve never found what happened to it. My bet is rolled off down the mountain. 360 degrees gives you a choice of a lot of rugged hiding spots.
At least we’re getting snow now, even if the rest of the week is going to be striped rain and ice.
Something to make your day: Roman glass dish found in Nara, Japan, along with a Sassanid piece. 5th-century Japanese tomb.
The Silk Road…wouldn’t be surprised, if authentic, if it didn’t come in via a Chinese trader. Having the dish in that good condition and virtually lacking patina is rare. The lack of patina is particularly peculiar, but I’m not familiar with the condition of things in long burial in the Japanese climate. In the Med, it would tend to have a kind of a peacock surface, lots of green iridescence if it were clear glass. I don’t know I’ve ever seen any ancient with that cobalt blue color. So I have some reservations, but then again, 5th century AD, it was already an antique when it went into the tomb.
Snow showers predicted for our area today, not much accumulation. Most of our snow was on Monday, about 2-1/2″. Right now, it’s just cold, and it will get colder tonight and tomorrow. I feel bad for the people who will be in our Christmas parade tomorrow evening, especially when I recall the cheer clubs don’t dress very warmly, and the lows are predicted to be around 7 degrees F. I’ll be out there helping organize the parade, getting the floats in the correct order, and helping direct traffic, along with the rest of our amateur radio group. We support the parade organizers in getting things ready to go, and letting them know if there are any “missing” pieces. Then, Saturday evening, there’s another parade in a different town, it’s supposed to be right nasty, freezing rain and snow mix. Last year at this particular parade, it was just plain COLD, with about 8 inches of snow on the ground. It took me almost a half-hour in the car with the heater at full blast to get warm….I’d even taken off my coat to get the cold air trapped inside it away. I’ll be carrying those little iron oxide heating pads in my shoes and gloves for those events.
Earmuffs. I’ve ordered earmuffs.
I have a hood on my heavy coat, plus earmuffs, a stocking cap…..
But y’all need a very cunning Jayne hat. You walk down the street wearing that hat, people say, “Now there’s a lass/lad who ain’t afeared o’ nothin’!”
C.J. could add Kaylee’s parasol. Joe would likely do better with Shepherd Book’s travel bag. Heh. — One suspects Joe could do fine with the parasol, while also carrying a quarterstaff or katana. — One suspects C.J. could do likewise. 😀
Ah, BCS, C.J. already has the best pirate hat ever. And she doesn’t need a wood stick – she’s wicked with a sword! 😉
Lol! But a Jane hat would be warmer…
It would be. I’m just worried about the upgraded weapons. (AAAANND, I’m stopping right there.)
Ear flaps and a pompom on top! Unbeatable!
Cold today, high around 27, it was down around 7 last night…..tonight’s parade will be around 24 degrees…..I feel bad for the little girls in the cheer clubs…seems they never have enough on to keep warm….tomorrow, I have another parade I’ll be volunteering for, and the forecast for that parade is freezing rain, then rain…..last year, there was 8 inches of snow on the streets, and bitter cold temperatures….stood out there for 3 hours, and even though I had plenty of layers of thermal clothing on, I was cold. I must have spent too much time in the tropics…..
Forget Bullwer-Lytton! “It was a dark and stormy day!” 2:50PM and I had to turn the lights on!
it wasn’t too bad tonight…I had those little iron oxide heating pads in my shoes and my gloves…..and after I got back home, why, I jumped into the spa…yeah, it’s out on the back deck, but when you sink down into 102 degree water, the air temperature isn’t a factor. It’s getting out again, but your temperature is high enough that it’s like getting a cool blast of air…I don’t hang around to get too cooled off, though, especially when the water dripping off me is freezing as it hits the deck… 😉
