I haven’t made actual baked mac and cheese in, well, forever, because it seems so small a thing to heat the big oven for.
But last night, yes: our family recipe: large elbow macaroni, boiled done, and colby cheese cut in small cubes. Pepper. A little salt, not much. I got this far when I recalled I had no milk in house—the recipe involves a half cup of milk. But hey, what is sour cream if not—? So I put sour cream and the cheese in the bottom of the baking dish, added hot macaroni, stirred with spatula, put shredded cheddar on top, popped into 350 oven for 30 min. Very nicely browned.
So far so good.
We’ve got lasagna for New Year’s Day.
I’ve got rezzes for New Year’s Eve at the Swinging Doors, our local pub. With a booth, thank you.
Doing just ok here!
Hmm, maybe the booth we had that Monday evening, inside the back door, halfway down…seats 6 comfortably? Or did you get one a bit less spacious, so you can actually carry on a conversation without having to use megaphones between the two of you?
One of the littler booths. We may invite a couple of friends—it’ll seat 4. But got it! That’s at a premium on New Years!
Southern Arizona is briefing for (gasp) snow on New Year’s Day. Our area is supposed to get snow down to the 3000 foot level. Since our city is above 4500 feet I suspect we’ll get an inch or so. Enough to convince the wise to stay home and the nodcocks to get into serious trouble. At least it’s on a holiday when most people don’t work, but if it starts early there are going to be a lot of drunks and buzzed individuals in a heap of trouble. Most cars here don’t come with all-season tires (all-season tires are actually worse for wear and stopping power than “summer” tires in both rain and dry if the temperature is above 40 degrees-most of the year here) and almost no one has snow tires (one snowfall every second year doesn’t call for snow tires). Enjoy a great New Year’s eve, and drive responsibly. We’ll just have to first foot with our next door neighbors.
Dear me—we wish we had it!
But stay careful! Arizona drivers in snow may be just a little iffy…
Forecast here in L.A. is for cold, 30% chance of rain and snow down possibly to 2000 feet. We actually got down to ‘frozen’ yesterday morning.
Update: The new target date for the first two episodes of Shadows of Tyranny is now 2014-01-15.
The producers have quality issues with two actors’ recordings to work out. Sigh. I’m one of them, and I’m trying to clear up whatever they are hearing with my microphone, software, computer, and room. I’m now waiting until one of their audio producers can get back to me with suggestions on what I’m missing, what I’ve set wrong, or whatever the issue is.
So far, so good, though. My mike is good, my computer setup is good. It’s only a matter of ironing out what they’re hearing once they run my files through their system. (I’m using Audacity to record in.)
I will also be getting familiar with Dropbox. I’m still learning my way around with it.
I used the free version of Audacity years ago to add a sound track to a PowerPoint presentation. I was very impressed with the ease of use and features on a free program.
It’s cold and might get down to 36°F tonight, though I doubt that in town where I am. So far, I don’t think we’ve had temps below freezing all season. It’s only dipped below 40 about three or four times.
I wore my Doctor Who scarf for errands today. No one batted an eyebrow. :-/
At 9:50PM, EDT, it’s 21 F out, expected low is 12 F. It’s snowing off and on.
I guess this isn’t a good time to go out and get in the spa……
Wot? No snow or icy lake? Part of the “experience”, ain’t it?
CJ’s got her wind machine pointed our way. S’posed to get to the high teens tonight. Don’t get our old gray blanket back until next week!
Temperature is plunging now (mid-day) as the front moves through. Friends in northwestern AZ have 3 inches of snow on the ground (as of an hour ago) and still falling. It hasn’t started precipitating here yet, but the winds are blowing with gusts to 35mph. We’ve abandoned all thought of going out for New Years Eve and I currently have a pot of beef with marrow bones starting on the stove. We’ll have home-made vegetable beef soup and that glorious aroma throughout the house by dinner tonight.
We are well stocked with wine from Latah Creek and a half bottle of Triticale whiskey from Dry Fly. Our copy of the “Lion in Winter” is handy and we have wood for the fireplace. Happy New Year’s to all our dear friends and associates in the Wavy Navy and especially to you, CJ and Jane!
Thank you! Pleasant memories. I am glad to report the knee has completely recovered. And we have our own bottles of same!
It blew threw LA overnight – and kept blowing most of the day. The windows kept rattling; I put another blanket on the bed, and today I had to turn the heater on. (It was 64 inside when I got up.) But if there was precipitation in this area, it wasn’t much; they did get snow around Lake Elsinore, enough to require some road closures.
It rained cats and dogs last night, as a front blew through in waves. Half an hour of ZOMGrain, followed by an hour of just wind. I haven’t been able to see if Haleakala got snow or not because of a cloud cap on the summit. There was some argument about whether or not Zorro was going to claim the quilt and the accompanying half of the bed; she was evicted. You have fur, cat!
We’ll see just how breezy and chilly it gets at tonight’s New Year’s party, halfway up the mountain. We’re digging out the foul-weather gear and the woolly hats, just in case; I’m actually going to put on socks!
