I also get the details of the case they’re deliberating. 😉 Curiosity is killing me. But I have ventured no opinions. She’s been having a good time with fellow jurors, in all due solemnity, of course. Jane likes people, and wore her ‘Ignorance Killed the Cat. Curiosity Was Framed…” shirt. (That’s a quote from yrs truly. Tripoint.)
I get Jane back today.

I’ve yet to actually serve on a jury, although I’ve been eliminated from the jury every time I get summoned to serve. Something about being an analyst…. If you are guilty, you don’t want an analyst to look too closely at the evidence, and if your case is weak you certainly don’t want a scientifically well-read person in the jury.
By the way, it’s almost time to start the re-read of the Foreigner series in preparation for Visitor if you can’t spend all day and night reading…
Streets ahead of you. Started my reread last week. I’m currently about 1/4 into Explorer. Being retired, I can and have spent all day and night rereading. Tight on space as I am, my library is limited to those books I will want to reread at some point. Guess whose books take up a large chunk of that space. . . .
Thanks for reminding me about that quote. Every time I reread tripoint I end up quoting it for weeks afterward. 🙂
The one time I was called for jury duty, I was already living in Australia. My mother had to write to the offices of whoever was in charge of that thing for more info, then you get it postponed, and when I visited next, I had to look through some paperwork saying I no longer lived in the country and would not be able to serve on a jury.
Frankly, I’m pleased. I was never thrilled by the idea of jury duty. XD
My own reread of Foreigner is about to begin, I think. I have it sitting right here, and I keep looking at it fondly. (My God, I am such a weirdo.)
Wow, I should have edited that better. I had to look through the paperwork they sent and sign it and give my new location, saying I no longer lived in the country and wouldn’t be able to serve on a jury. I haven’t heard anything since, so I guess they took the hint.
Hah, I like that quote a lot. I’m quite sure my feline associates, who are both eyeballing me at the moment, would concur. … Or was that conquer? Both seem likely.
Now that you’ve got Jane back… was she properly cleaned, starched, and pressed, and perhaps polished, before she was returned? ;D
Best Wishes!
We went out for supper.
The case—conviction. I could have done that one with a clear conscience. Driver runs from police sergeant at near a hundred mph down a very busy thoroughfare and through intersections after rabbiting away from a traffic stop for speeding. Yep. That’s not all there was to it. But pretty clearly he done it.
I had to opt out of serving on a jury here in MD for a drug case, but the judge made it easy. He asked if any one had a problem with the drug laws and my hand went up. In Texas once I was excused because I was a psychology major in college and the case was a competency hearing. They didn’t want anyone on the jury who had any knowledge of psychology. Go figure.
I did actually serve on one jury here in MD for a civil trial; the plaintiff appeared to be one of those guys who sues people as a matter of course; it was extremely satisfying to find for the defendant in that case!
Sounds like I need to re-read “Tripoint” – I did NOT remember that quote.

It turns out, florescence and bioluminescence is a lot more common than we thought, especially in fish. One bitty creature produces bioluminescence when disturbs, thus outlining intruding fish for larger predators! Anyway, it might be worth getting a black light for your aquarium.
Our actinic lights have the corals glowing in the night phase. My current lights are LED, that starts the morning in a kind of purple, with coral glow, proceeds to full bright daylight, and then goes back toward the purple/blue by evening. It even adjusts itself according to the phases of the full moon, re how the light fades.
An entertaining (true) account of jury selection and a trial by David Malki, author of the Wondermark comic.
The defense lawyer’s PowerPoint presentation featured “clipart of scales, doves, and cartoon Sherlock Holmes… the underlined words “NOT GUILTY” splashing inconsequentially on the wall 20 feet behind the screen”

Off-Topic: Kitchen Misadventures. Guess who thought of, but then forgot, to grease the muffin pans this morning? Yep, that’s right. I did everything right to make cornbread muffins this morning. I thought about spraying or greasing the pans. I skipped it, didn’t know I did, until I went to take them out of the pan. Oh, hahahaha, what a mess. The muffins are quite fine, just quite crumbled from extracting them.
If I were serving for company, I’d have to make more. As it is, these are halfway on their way to cornbread stuffing. They may wind up as that after all. But I’d wanted to make cornbread.
LOL, I’m pretty sure I’ll remember next time! — Guess who hasn’t baked a lot, and certainly not since Thanksgiving dinner?
Oh, I feel like such a dork! — The muffins taste good, though. They just look rather muddled.
@Joe, as Walt Kelley said so well We have met the enemy and he is us. As I wrote about keeping your bees at home, and providing them the necessary forage, it’s reiterated in an article appearing yesterday in the AAAS journal Science, “good beekeeping practices” have been neglected commercially, in the interests of commerce.
“At a larger scale, the international regulations on honey bee movements should be maintained and adhered to. This is not a case of ‘Well, the genie is out of the bottle now…’ This work really highlights the risks we incur when moving animals and plants outside their native ranges.” CSM
And I’m still arguing that neonics need to be used safely and respectfully, and can be!
