She had as a prezzie one of those Chinese models to paint and assemble—in this case a really gorgeous ‘moon’ style Chinese bed with intricate fretwork. Wiishu-scale. Amazing creation, very meticulous. So she is taking a day off from sinks and floors and emergencies to assemble and paint this gorgeous thing. She’s taking pix, but hasn’t had time to put them up.

I wonder if Obama, the cool professor, could also be an Aspie. Kinda fits, doesn’t it?
Glad Jane is having some time off to enjoy some fun. CJ, I hope you’re taking some time off to relax too.
I’ve been working on a new font idea, yesterday and today, as a break from what I’d been working on, and because the idea was fresh in mind.
What I’d thought would be formal but quiet enough for everyday text… started taking on a life of its own. It’s more casual and seems to be leaning toward calligraphic, with some influences from the 1920’s / 1930’s, and a little Cyrillic thrown into the mix.
Last night, puzzled by what I’d had in mind versus what this was turning into as I worked on it, I sketched on paper, and got the more formal idea. Hmm.
But I like what’s currently shaping up on-screen, too, so I’m going with that until I get enough in that I’ll go back to my ongoing projects.
Today, I think I see part of what I have here. I think I have an upright italic, or the start for an italic for the more formal idea, yet this is more casual.
So I either have two ideas or a formal / casual dichotomy, or I have a roman / italic divide going, before turning it into an italic. Not sure yet, but I like what’s happening. The more formal version will get in later.
I’m still hoping I can get something into the submissions review process in January.
So, overall, I’m pleased, but I still feel enormous pressure, budget-wise, income-wise.
Of Note: I got a card in the mail from Chondrite! I’ll open it tonight. It was a highlight for the day. Thanks, Chondrite! Looking forward to reading the card.
Hoping our Texans and Oklahomans (Oklahomians?) near the tornados will report in. BCS, you’re from the Houston area, if I remember correctly, which the Boston Globe doesn’t report as affected by the tornados, but my geography of others’ locations remains hazy. Just hoping folks and their families are OK.
@Raesean – Yes, Houston. Tornadoes aren’t typically a big problem here, but can happen, usually spawned by tropical storms, such as the one that did a number on my house about ten years ago. But for Texas further inland, and for Oklahomans, they can sure be a problem.
Oklahomans get very serious about tornadoes, with good reason. One relative has a basement / storm cellar that’s about as strong and supplied as one can get.
We’ve had a slight dip in temps and more rain, very stormy one and two days ago, but not truly cold here yet. But there’s also a true family story of someone’s new car getting stripped of paint down past primer to bare metal, on the stormward side, years back. Yikes.
Hoping associates northward are doing fine.
The March 2, 2012 tornado in Blue Ash, OH was an EF-4. Blue Ash is a small suburb of Cincinnati. IIRC, the tornado struck early in the morning, as people were getting ready to go to work. I’m not surprised at the appearance of tornadoes this time of year, in any location.
Thanks to El Nino, weather patterns are a bit screwy, but there are other factors as well that can create strange weather phenomena.
We didn’t get anything up here in Tulsa (north-east section of Oklahoma) except torrential rain and some localised flooding. The counties south and east of us are badly hit with floods. About 5-6 days before it hit the Corps of Engineers who control the dams on the rivers around here opened the flood gates on Lake Keystone because it was already 6 feet over the flood stage. This sent a flood of water down the Arkansas. The lakes east of us are now very, very high with damage to docks, boats, etc.
I’d love to see the pictures of the moon bed when she’s finished; but what is a moon bed? A round bed like the full moon, or a crescent like a hammock?
It’s a box style bed, like the old cupboard beds, but surrounded by fretwork panels, and the entry to the bed is a round doorway in the fretwork. Very hand-carved, very elaborate.
