This isn’t supposed to happen after St. Paddy’s Day.
It didn’t last long, however.
Supposed to get up to 50 today, but snow is not helping us get the pond warm!
I’m much better today. Yesterday evening the left ear decided to come online. Now, you would think this would improve the situation by half.
Nay. Having both inner ears reporting the same thing means that at least you can look at a horizon line like, say, the bottom of the wall, and keep both your wings on level…as t’were. But when one ear works and the other is still reporting freefall conditions, you tend to rather well pitch over. So it actually was worse.
However, I at least did not wake up totally floating in space, and I’ve had a few twinges, but I am no longer having to devote half my waking brain to keeping level and upright. So we are better
My big bag of baking soda ought to arrive today. I’ll be correcting pond chemistry forthwith, even if it’s chilly.
It was in the 50s yesterday here in West Central Ohio, today, it got up to about 78 near my home. Right now, we’ve got storms moving in, but the rest of the week is supposed to be warm…..a high of 69 for my 34th wedding non-anniversary tomorrow……
The people in west Texas figure it isn’t really spring until after Easter, because they get a frost so often about this time. (People refer to it as the “Easter freeze” – that’s how often it happens.)
Houston, here. We can (in general) get a late frost up until Easter, but after that, not.
This year, however, unless the weather changes drastically this week or next, there’s no chance of freezing. — The weather soothsayers claim 80’s highs, 60’s lows for at least the next 10 to 15 days.

Wake up floating in space, huh? Well, swim for it, then, lads and lasses, if the cylinder’s lost spin. Hope no one’s stuck in the shower.
That traveling blue box (and a classroom) start up again this weekend. Looking forward to that.
It’s not Ohio if you don’t get an April blizzard.
It’s not a good ski season unless you can ski on the Fourth of July.
But you have no fish yet, right? One would think some of the heavy-weight black plastic sheeting covering the surface would provide free heating. Keeping it afloat? One might imagine a beneficial use for excessive styrofoam packing peanuts scattered evenly at the interface. If cut to the shape of the pond it might do wonders to eliminate an icey surface.
The black plastic sheeting is a good idea, except that the sheeting needs to let in some light for the water lilies, algae, and other plant life. They make blue pool covers, thicker blanket-like sheeting, somewhat translucent, but I don’t know if that would be sufficient for the water plants. From memory, I suspect the blue sheeting would not impede the plants too much, but should still aid in heating the surface and deeper, as Paul’s good idea intends..
The styrofoam peanuts, I’d think something larger, but floating as Paul suggests, would be best. What about the cords with floats that they use to divide swimming pool racing lanes? Or cork tiles? Some sort of small buoys? The big “noodle” foam things, swimming toys, or kkckboards for swimming practice? I’m not sure what’s available, but that should spark other ideas from Lowe’s / Home Depot or a pool / spa store…Academy Sports store?
It got up to 85 today. Ha Ha Ha – maniacal laughter.
Get some fish you can eat if necessary.
Jonathan up in sweltering New Hampshire
“Pneumonia front” went through yesterday. 75F to 47F in the space of an hour….and me caught out with no jacket…
