Then I deny, and the bot will give you a rejection letter. Even so, it’s not too late. You can answer it and ask to be accepted and I’ll fish you out of the pile. But I need some sort of a letter proving you’re not selling real estate in Vladivostok.
Same deal — I’m giving new applications a few days to write me any sort of a letter (instructions abound, below this post)

Hey, I can get you a great deal on a used, one-owner bridge . . .
4-5 a day from Russia, also the Pw addy, which masks all sorts of chicanery,—used to be Palau (South Pacific) but is no longer—I do have good-guy Russian readers, but I don’t somehow think that’s who’s trying so desperately and daily to get a toe in the door.
New member saying hi 🙂
Apologies for doing the thing where a newbie comes in and starts asking dumb questions on already-settled matters, but—have you guys thought about using a dedicated discussion forum (something like Discourse or even good ol’ phpbb) rather than WordPress’ built-in comment system? You’d have a lot more automated tools available to combat bot & spammer registration, as well as the ability to select community moderators to shoulder some of the workload so you don’t have to spend your own time on admin work. Additionally, it’d enable you to deactivate public account registration on your blog, since people would create accounts on the forum side rather than on WordPress.
It’d also make conversations a lot more discoverable by members, since in addition to embedding discussion threads like this on each post, there would also be a forum interface to catalog and keep existing discussion threads. (For example, I’d love to kick off a conversation about the differences in Ragi pronunciation between Kimberly Schraf, who narrates the LoC versions of the Foreigner series for the blind and sight-impaired, and Daniel Thomas May, who narrates the Audible versions, but I’m not sure where the appropriate thread is—do I just jump into one of the loooooong ongoing threads on one of the “Books” posts listed on the right sidebar?)
I wish you luck keeping the spammers out. There are WP plugins that can help, too, but none of them are set-it-and-forget-it. Unfortunately, the only way to well and truly fix the problem is to disable wordpress account signups, which isn’t really a fix at all.
I’d only ever try selling you fine martian swamp. Russian real-estate is so last year. More seriously, as Sloth might put it, spam is a Pain
