Not the virus. Just crud. But ok.
We’re saying a reluctant goodbye to Scott—he’s been with us a long time, part of the ‘family’, he and Andrea. But construction jobs have to end, and he has to move on to a shower install elsewhere. He’ll pop back in to help us with a couple of things, but not having Scott around during the day is…well, we’ll miss him.
We’re still locked down. Some people in Yakima and Snohomish counties decided they were immune and bunched up without masks. Bad move.
Ben, there’s worse things than a house deal gone, its one that ‘takes’ and turns out to involve legal tangles and personalities. This too shall pass, is my motto, and the chambered nautilus my totem. When things crash, you just build a new chamber and grow. Wishing you and the furry terrors the best. Youngster and nippiness; do what mom-cat does: tap firmly on the leather of the nose with one finger and say ‘No’ sharply and firmly. Takes a while, but that nose-tap is catese for I’m really serious here. Kitty faces are sacred as you may know, and the mom-pat is serious stuff.
Hope all of you are snug and safe, no bar-hops, no wild parties. Waiting for the vaccine, here.
Meanwhile I have a box of mushrooms (the watery marine kind: if you don’t specify marine you get recipes on google, but not to be deterred, one company offers recipes for marine mushrooms… ) and I’ll be dealing with those. Inability to reach the sump for maintenance did as much damage as the 8 day winter power-out 2-3 years ago. This is my first chance in about 3 years to get it back in real good form.
How about some Cherryh related book award news:

Nice! Thx for posting
This is wonderful! I just re-read Alliance Rising and SO enjoyed that book. Hoping to read more 🙂 All congratulations to CJ and Jane!!!

I wonder if this includes CJ’s family or former homes.
AIUI, not unless she can claim she is under the soverignity of the five tribes and they accept it. Ultimately it’s up to the tribes to decide. An interviewee I saw made the point this is no change at all; SCOTUS merely affirmed their treaty rights are not up for local interpretation. For the most part, the major effect should be in social things and observance of cultural traditions, such as the peyote ceremony. Outright criminal stuff will probably still be prosecuted by the state.
Actually that was the basis of the Supreme Court case, that the plantiff had been wrongly convicted and incarcerated by the state when the state did not have jurisdiction to do so. The plantiff (I believe of Creek Indian descent) was arrested and charged for a crime committed on Indian land and only the federal government has jurisdiction of Indian peoples on Indian land.
Based on my knowledge of Carolyn’s previous residences and past SW Oklahoma background, I doubt there is any overlap.
Yeah, from what I read it applies to crimes committed by or against Native Americans on their own treaty territory, that need to be prosecuted by the federal government (or investigated by the federal agents or the tribal police, if I understood it correctly).
If CJ and Jane aren’t native American (and I’ve never read anything indicating that, on her Genealogy tab), this would only apply to them if they committed a crime against a native american on Indian treaty territory.
Somehow, I don’t see our ladies going on a crime spree to Oklahoma…
But reaffirming Native American rights over their sovereign treaty lands might help with some other unjust encroachments, as in the brutally repressive treatment of the North Dakota pipeline XL protesters who were trying to safeguard both their only water source and a burial ground on (disputed) treaty land.
Back in the ’70’s I had a book, I think entitled “My Brother’s Keeper”, about the systematic failures of the federal government to live up to the promises they made to Native Americans and abrogation of the Treaties they signed in perpetuity. I can’t find it online now, too many other works by that title, but perhaps you can find it. (I’ve still got it packed away in some box; I rarely let go of a book.)
It shows one can never rely on the solemn promises of our federal institutions for any length of time–get it while you can, apply “if convenient” to tomorrow–current experiences not withstanding.
Is this it? Our Brother’s Keeper: the Indian in White America, by Edgar S. Cahn. Published 1975.
It came to me later that the author might be Dee Brown. That search didn’t work either. It’s almost certainly been out of print for 50 years! He did write “Bury my heart at Wounded Knee”.
I was rather thinking of the Gan and the Eidi (?sp).
Just under 2 months to “Divergence”. At least one thing about 2020 doesn’t suck !!
I saw Neowise earlier this, err, yesterday evening. 🙂 But just with hand-held, low power field glasses. It was really shakey, but enough to identify it. For now this evening I’ll set up a stepladder for bracing and try to find my “lost” pair of binoculars. Right under the Big Dipper.
Good on ya! We haven’t had clear enough skies in the last week around evening to see it. There is also the matter of the West Maui Mountains being somewhat in the way…
OK, maybe you can’t see it from your backyard, but you don’t have to drive up Haleakala to see it! Just a moderately clear view to the north. Maui’s not THAT big! Anywhere around mid-island should be good, IIRC. It was easier to see than I remember Halley’s Comet had been. You owe it to yourself to make the (modest) effort.
Actually, I think either this or next weekend I am going to suggest to DH a dinner drive to the north end of Maui, and comet viewing thereafter. The West Maui Mountains, from our area, do not constitute ‘a moderately clear view to the north.’ Stargazing through rock no es bueno.
@Chondrite, This weekend! It’s dimming and will continue to dim as it receeds from the Sun.
I was talking to a neighbor about viewing Neowise’s comet. He heard to look near the horizon. Well, maybe, but here around Portland, no. And that’s why he missed it. His source lived farther south and forgot we live on a sphere. How “high” something in the night sky may appear depends on one’s latitude.
So here’re the keys: it’s arcing up below the Big Dipper. So the first is, how high is the Big Dipper as seen from your latitude? It’s closest approach will be around the 22nd. At that time it will be just a little further below and to the left, west, of the bottom corner of the “bowl” than the width of the top of the bowl. And for us, that’s well off the horizon! You want it to be full dark. You may find binoculars very helpful–I don’t know how good your eyes are–and I put a stepladder in my backyard to rest my elbows on, steadying my grip. To help locate it, practice “averted vision”; don’t try to look directly at it, look a little bit aside, or pay closer mental attention to what’s right around the exact spot you’re looking at. Good luck.
We saw it last night. Sky was finally pretty clear, and NEOWISE was nice and clear. At 10, it was higher than expected (we’re at 38.26 N). As Paul said, don’t look right at it! Binoculars (10×50) helped a lot. The dust tail was really long and distinct, couldn’t see the ion tail. Well worth a try !
I saw it last night while walking my dog. Since I am in a large city, I only saw a smudge, but I was happy to see it.
My own recovery from the second elbow surgery continues. Pain and swelling are greatly reduced, and range of motion is slowly increasing. However, it’s still difficult to lift anything over 5 pounds, and even if I bring a cup to my mouth, it hurts. A lot of bone was removed, so I expect it to take a while. I’m just 7 weeks out from surgery. I’m allowed to do the things I want to do, within reason, and for the first time in a couple of months, I was able to start my lawn mower and get the grass cut. I’m not sure about going kayaking, as I can’t yet lift the boat up onto the roof rack, and not sure I can get the roof rack up onto the car roof. I hope this is the last surgery on this elbow, because the next operation will probably be a replacement of some kind, and that will pretty much take care of any activities that I currently participate in that require the right arm.
Yow! Hopefully this surgery will ‘take’; sounds like the next step will involve a bionic limb — or a hook!
Joe, we’re hoping your recovery continues uneventfully, and you regain the mobility you have lost. What effect will this have on playing the guitar?
Joe, Glad to hear that you are improving!
