I just deep-sixed about five members for having names like Ilostweightaskmehow and for using the entire alphabet in their usernames. The spamfilter I have only catches our honest members trying to provide links for legitimate purchases, but cheerfully allows viagraseller and internetinfofast to join our merry crew. Honestly, would YOU ingest a pill shipped from whoknowswhere and consisting of whoknowswhat? That’s more adventurous than anybody ought to be.
On the other hand, we have nearly 800 members who are not selling viagra, and I treasure each and every one of you.
When you have an idle moment (ha!) it is probably worth also checking the email addresses of the other 800. The (political comment) site I run gets a few new “people” registered every day who have reasonably sensible usernames, but the email address being something like “lola@girls.ru” suggests that they’re not really there for the incisive commentary …
Yep. We’ve had ’em.
Ahh, yes. The ubiquitous “spam comment.”
Nice to be a human. I wonder how the spammers feel.
Oh come on, if you can’t trust someone named “UkranianSurplusCCCPPills4U”, who can you trust?
😆 I needed that!
When Yahoo rejected “Azureblu” as already in use,
I added 4u as a quick fix. Who knew it would be
so close to a spammers dream(Azureblu4u)!
I’m busy pumpimg my cat full of opioids… until his stomach settles and we revert to boring NSAIDs. When would I get time to pimp other (less useful) pharmaceuticals? P.S. Chino likes the good stuff… keep it coming, he says. And mowwwwwww….
Your CAT? poor baby!Is he ok?
Yes and no. He’s on a daily drug (Metacam) for arthritis which can affect the stomach, liver and kidneys so if he starts vomiting (which he does occasionally) it’s a trip to the vets for him. This time they’ve taken him off the Metacam for a few days and put him on an opioid that has to be squirted into his mouth. Vomiting has stopped, but that may only be because he’s also stopped eating… Back to the vets this morning he goes.
Poor kitty!
We just took in two shelter cats, one of which has turned out to have pneumonia. We’re giving him oral antibiotics and squirting a med in his mouth twice a day. He is NOT enjoying it, needless to say. But both cats are so sweet and we were so critter-deprived…
Found a good article on ebook formats. This part was particularly insightful:
While ebooks might seem a lot like digital music circa 2005, you can’t rip a book, so the only way to get a bestseller on your reader is to buy it legally, or to steal it. It’s pretty much that simple.
http://gizmodo.com/5478842/giz-explains-how-youre-gonna-get-screwed-by-ebook-formats (warning for bits of adult language, if that sort of thing on the internet bothers you).
Interesting!
I just wiped out about 100 spammers off of a forum system… I think I fixed it enough that they can’t spam anymore, though. Three blessed hours without a new user…
Oh, that’s *good*. And we think *we* have problems!
This software doesn’t allow you to have gateway-‘must’ answers to foil the ‘bots. I wish it did. The mods installed that over on another forum I use, and spam-ac just plummeted. Things I want on WP, I’ll tell you…a ‘must-answer’ question. Just one. Dunno what I’d ask, but I’d think of something.
I’m in fact a programmer and can do interesting things to WordPress, although my signing up is happy coincidence due to having just re-read the first two Foreigner trilogies. If it gets too disgusting, let me know and we can probably figure out something.
That’s a deal!
On our site (which is Movable Type rather than WP), the only thing I’ve been able to do is to make it “you can’t log on until a human bean has approved”. Doesn’t take more than a few minutes a day, given the site sends me an email when there’s a registration attempt, but I only look at them when one looks vaguely real (we get around 5-10 unreal attempts per day).
In theory, I could install a Captcha on the registration and comments boxes, but a) my php programming isn’t up to it, 2) some of the cleverer bots are getting good enough to get past it, and iii) as a result of 2, the Captcha’s are getting fuzzy enough that humans can’t read them, either.
heh. I don’t *sell* Viagra but I can easily get you some! 😉
Just trying this out, frankly. Totally experimental. Want to see if the avatar loaded.
How is the Windows 7? I may have it on the (so far)ghostly “new laptop”. I’m on the hunt for a
sacrificial ebook. See you later!
Jane and I agree on the Windows 7 upgrade. I put a rant, er, post on her blog in reply to her Win7 upgrade. I am tolerating some of the things that Win7 has done to my interface, but I hate the “Mommy and Daddy Microsoft know best what you need. I was quite comfortable with XP Pro, but that’s all gone by the wayside for this computer. I bought it new from Dell, it had Vista on it, and I carefully followed each step of the process for upgrading. It didn’t restore many of the programs I had backed up in the File Transfer utility, and when it did restore them, there were compatibility issues. Anyway, it’s on Jane’s site, no sense in making you read it twice.
Rant over, back to your regularly scheduled discussion.
I’m still on XP. Mostly. (Some of my software doesn’t run with it, and wants Win98 – and there’s no adequate replacement for that software that I know of.)
32Gb iPad is on order. Yes, I’m an Apple fan-boi 😉
Looking forward to Closed Circle on an ebook reader on 4/3 !!!!!
@you Aja Jin…..I’ve been using Apple off and on since the late 80’s. (Apple Bonkers anyone?) Looking forward to your thoughts on the iPad.
Good luck in opening the pond, CJ ji……you seem to be a few weeks ahead of the east coast….I still have a lot of ice on the pool…..the weather has changed though….we haven’t had the wood stove going since last sunday…kittehs *very* annoyed and have moved to the dryer. Looking forward to the new book….sounds like it’s going to be fun. Do hope there will be pics of the pond on C&L. Missed you guys. 😉
We’re having a VERY welcome cloudless, if a bit windy, day in north Texas. I haven’t had the furnace on in a few days, but the two small gas space heaters in the bathrooms stay on, so far. They don’t use much gas, and continuously lighting and extinguishing them is too much trouble. One is directly below the wall-mounted lavatory, which consequently is always warm, like a Roman floor over the hypocaust. Agate-cat clearly considers the whole set-up designed expressly for his comfort. He pretty well fills the lavatory!
I’m also eager to hear about the iPad. I have had Macs and Apples since the RAM was 64K, yes, that wasn’t a typo, 64 kilobytes.
B&N has Deceiver available for pre-order. YUM! Plus they have a copy of your cover. Glorious!!! You get the best covers!
My aunt has a Mac and I gather that she has never used anything else, hence the constant “I don’t know,I haven’t ever had that kind of problem”! If
I had the money I’d get a Mac. After all haven’t we all heard about the “apple a day…” thingy. I’m positive that Microsoft needs to answer for a
number of ailments arising from frustration.
@OSG – If you have samples… 😉
There’s a great WordPress plugin to deal with comment spam called Sabre — stands for Simple Anti Bot Registration Engine. Just do a search on it from the Plugins – Add News in your WordPress settings. It keeps fake registrants/comment spam out by checking for overfast (automated) registrations, fake users, fake Javascript, invalid code, fake ISPs, etc.
I have a much lesser trafficked blog than yours, but I used to have huge problems with comment spam until I got fed up & found this add-on — & never any problems since.
Thank you so much. I’m keeping this info on file!
