Always glad to find a thorough bibliography. Do you know of any good ways to acquire your published nonfiction? (I learned recently that CAT FANCY magazine will be ending and replaced with CATSTER!)

I recently did manage to acquire a copy of _The Company Wars_ board game from eBay after learning about it in a history of Mayfair Games printed in _Designers & Dragons: The ’80s_ by Evil Hat Productions. I’m still awaiting receipt of _The Witchfires of Leth: A Crossroads Adventure in the World of C. J. Cherryh’s Morgaine_ from BetterWorldBooks, as I dig into some tangential products. (I love your Morgaine stories so much!)

As someone with an interest in both your stories and in games, I’m curious: can you recall much about what it was like working with Mayfair Games (and presumably Bill Fawcett) way back when?

It’s not up to date, alas.

Re Bill Fawcett, I met him at conventions. When I had a problem with a pirate, I needed to demonstrate ‘value’ in the intangible they had ripped off, so I called Bill for a quick contract to take advantage of those rights (and I did get the pirate shut down) —which later to my chagrin materialized in the Crossroads Adventure thing, which I never would have agreed to—as a matter of fact, I didn’t quite agree: the nature of the thing mutated under construction, and became that, and all I can say for it is that it was a one-shot and then done, which settled the moral debt. Company Wars the game was one I had some input on, but mostly in technical, not gaming background. The Cat Fancy thing might be in microfiche somewhere, but is probably rare except among cat breeders. It’s at least a straightforward piece on how to solve feline accidents.

Your reference to Cat Fancy prompted me to look up a couple of breeds at cfa.org. I always thought Birdie was a Maine Coon, but she certainly has the eyes of a Norwegian Forest Cat……. I’ll stick with rescued cats…..they need homes, too, and all of mine were rescued….although I’m pretty sure they rescued ME. too.

    • Laiel Shepherd

I did find the Crossroads thing curious, since it looks like it uses Dungeons & Dragons-style attributes with hit points and inventory management, which didn’t seem like a good interpretation for your stories. I haven’t received it yet, but I checked some information about the Crossroads series. The Company Wars at least seems to have tried to interpret the fiction into a game format to some degree, and importantly has some material provided by you!

In any case, I suppose I’ll just have to keep some things on a list and see if I can ever get a hold of them. For now, I’m still catching up on your ’80s titles! (I’ve actually had a bit of setback in realizing I hadn’t read some of your older short stories, so I’m catching up on things from Visible Light and such now.)
