The hurricane developed a second eye as a second storm out in the Atlantic collapsed, then Matthew wobbled off northward, leaving Lynn’s place in good shape. Dodged a real bullet with that one. Apparently the second storm, instead of reinforcing Matthew, siphoned off some of the energy…at least from what I gather from her report from the local weatherfolk.
Big sigh of relief.
it’s down to just barely a Category I hurricane now. Still a force to be reckoned with, as it can spawn tornadoes and torrential rains. From what I’ve seen Charleston, SC got flooded from the storm surge while Matthew was still a Category 3 storm. Nicole appears to be weakening, just about 5MPH above the threshold for a tropical storm, but it’s heading south, and might strengthen as it gets nearer warm waters.
There’ve been more tornado warnings in North Carolina this morning and afternoon from Matthew than I saw all along the Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina coasts. My ex-wife lives in Portsmouth, VA, (just west of Norfolk) and right now, she’s on the outer bands of the storm, and might not get much at all. At least, she’s not living close to the ocean.
Glad to hear Lynn suffered no damage from Matthew.
Very glad Lynn is OK and things are not as bad as they could’ve been for those affected.
Huh, a second eye forming. Now that’s (probably) unusual. I can’t recall hearing about prior cases, but that could just be my wonky memory, since it didn’t hit here. Useful that it disrupted both storm systems. Maybe the 2nd (Nicole) will dissipate instead of strengthening as it heads south.
doesn’t look like Nicole’s going to be getting weaker just yet

Last night, maximum sustained winds were 45MPH, now they’re up to 60MPH. As it gets over warm water, it’s
likely to strengthen. Who knows where it will go after this? Haiti doesn’t need to be slammed again.
All the models I’ve seen say Nicole is going north into the cooler waters of the North Atlantic.
I don’t know which models you’re using, but the National Hurricane Center says Nicole was moving south as of earlier today and is now stationary. 24.2N, 65.3W, and as of 4:00PM EDT, winds were 65 MPH, which is up from this morning when I reported them at 60 MPH
Matthew, OTOH, IS moving out into the cooler waters of the North Atlantic and is weakening slightly.
NHC plus the National Center for Atmospheric Research at https://www.ral.ucar.edu/hurricanes/realtime/current/
Mostly, NHC picks the best model, but it’s interesting to see the other models at times. Pretty much they all have Nicole running over Bermuda then into the North Atlantic.
