Some of our newer voices are getting lost in the to-and-fro. Let’s try this.
I hate to be Twitter, but…10-line limit on posts, please.

While WOL is getting broiled in the TX Panhandle, down here near-sh to the coast, it went from 90’s (I cranked the A/C down and wondered if it needed maintenance) to all this week, we’ve got low to mid-80’s highs and mid 60’s lows. Unseasonably cool. Not sure if we’re due for rain, and I haven’t heard what’s going on for the start of hurricane season.
Snow? In almost mid-May? Global climate change, check. I’ve wondered about that claim we’re due for a shift of the magnetic poles. :shrugs: Che serà serà .
The kitten’s weight, appetite, and energy are better today. A hair above skin and bones now. He’s convinced I’m daddy and savior. I’m so aware what a big job raising him right is going to be. Litterbox training is still not quite there, he peed on the bed, and I need to put down puppy pads. Climbing and navigation not quite there yet, but soon; he’s catching up better.
ragamuffin, gamin, guttersnipe I am sure there are more such names around….
No name has stuck or rung a bell yet. Hah, Raga Muffin, Pounce Sterling, and Pippin are the closest so far. He’s a dark brown tabby instead of grey like I’d thought. I was trying to think of something to go with Goober / Peanuts, but Jelly, Chocolate, or Brownie don’t seem to fit him. (He’s too emaciated to be Jelly.)
Yesterday, while picking at ice frosting my freezer, I managed to split a fingernail horizontally across the nail, somewhat into the quick but not as far as I’d feared. Today, I got brave and clipped it. I’m keeping a band-aid over it for fear of banging the exposed nail bed. So far, I haven’t hurt it too badly. Not sure how long it’ll take for the nail to grow out again to cover the exposed area. Anyone know?
Thin and brown? Sounds like a Kit Kat. 😉
Or a Bean.
I do stuff like that – my nails are still effed up from chemo – and it usually takes three of four days to start feeling comfortable again.
I suggest using an ice scraper on your freezer. Or a putty knife (a little too flexible for the best results, but helps). …I’ve even used a cold chisel occasionally.
I love the new rule. My family is hanging in there, making sure to find something to look forward to every day. That seems to help. The kitties help keep us entertained.
Fleas. Still fighting them. Carpet powder, may have to move things further to get everything. Laundry. ave they compromised the drying racks or the bathroom linen closet, etc? Bathed the kitten. Bathed me after changing the bed again. Bathed the kitten again because he’d peed in the carrier and was wet, poor baby. Hope the towel I dried hm with was not infested. Getting paranoid about the frelling fleas. Now cuddling scared kitten, who is drying offf. And Goober has habituated to the wrong litterbox, in the bedroom, instead of back to the bathroom. Gotta fix that too. Nearly 1:00pm. Dang.
Could you put the cats in the bathroom with litterbox and food/water, and bomb the rest of the house? The Raid flea foggers I have found to be quite effective. You might have to sit outside on the stoop while waiting for the fumes to finish.
My vet recommends Cheristin, applied between the shoulder blades of each cat every month. It’s a biological, not chemical. Works really well. For spraying, I use Knockdown, also available through the vet. It has a growth hormone mimicker along with the pyrethins. I don’t like the commercially available sprays as the fleas have an immunity to them. The Knockdown “freezes” the fleas in whatever stage of growth they are when they contact it. An application lasts 3 months, sprayed on the places where the cats hide – not scratching posts. Both of them are pricey, but they work!
Joe! It is very good to see you posting again! — Thanks, I will ask my vet, next trip. I think the powder may have finally gotten most of them. Foggers might help if I had a day away with the cats and myself.
Puppy pads arrived, but are small if you want to cover a bed, say. Larger pads for incontinence for very senior or very junior humans should be better suited, and I’ll try a couple of these on top of the bedspread if and when I find the order, still missing. (I moved some things around.)
Kitten is still unclear on ,one does not pee on the bed, please, not at night, not at day. — I had a bright idea and ordered a very large (60 x 90) vinyl tablecloth, flannel-backed. Ordered two to switch out. Hope this helps. Hope he learns soon. Litterbox for poop seems to be firmly established, though.
Love the new rule! Nice to see so many of our salads out and about here!
Sorry about the marine tank. Chris and I also had a hard winter. Now that science indicates Covid-19 was here before March, we’re wondering if the 6-week “more than a cold” we suffered in January and February was really the virus. . . antibody tests are being requested. Please stay safe and healthy, both of you!!
Other than that, the cats have finally started to whack the dog when she goes after them (I fear doggie-speak “Want Friends!!” sounds more like “Oooh, Dinner – run!” to cats.) (BCS, good on Mama Pepper and the kits.)
Snow on the north coast has frozen any garden plans we had. But the peonies survived and are budding.
P.S. What about a virtual Shejicon this year?
Virtual Shejicon I would adore, especially considering where I live! Wonder how complicated it would be to set up Zoom for however-many salads would attend?
Cat Carrier Question: Nuts and Bolts / Screws: How do I determine the size / style of these needed for my cat carriers? It seems the ones I took to the shelter lost some of theirs (before, during, or after), and so I need to check the other carriers I have to see if they also need them. But therefore I’m missing about six pairs at least, and need more. I haven’t yet measured them, but see the shape of the bolts or screws, and the nuts look ordinary, but I’d imagine they come in several near-miss standard sizes. I disassembled two carriers, as I won’t need them. I haven’t seen Mystic in over a week, but he’s apparently around. So it’s Goober and the kitten, likely only.
Look for the company name; you can probably order online from them. Less fuss, less delay, and they know the sizes.
After some hunting, I ended up trying generic kennel / pet carrier fasteners sold in packs. I ordered two kinds, and it looks like either should work OK. Good luck on finding the nuts and bolts for the older carriers or the newer AmazonBasics one. — Side Note: I’ve about decided Petco and PetSmart are both good for charging more and delivering later with slightly odd website experiences than to buy via Amazon. Comparison almost always is giving me better results via Amazon, sometimes markedly so.
@bcs Take them to Home Depot or a local hardware store. They have the gauges to measure the screws, nuts, bolts, etc. to give you the exact match, and you get to go home with a functional carrier. Exact sizes may not be necessary. Ask the experts.
Virtual Shejicon sounds super! I’d love to have a reading of a chapter from the next book by CJ. It would be cool to have Betsy do a video presentation on books that are being published in the coming six months or year. Jane could introduce Wiishu to his adoring fans, and Finity could take her bow. It might be best to record a set of videos on YouTube and then invite the salads to a live opening and a live discussion/question & answer period.
We could do this. I just had a video conference with my doc (sinus infection) and it was painless. I could do a reading, no problem. Obviously we all have computers or phones.
But we don’t all use Windows and the fancy apps that come with it, about which nobody really knows what they do besides the obvious.
Oh, yeah, thank you! I’m “down” on this new rule, long needed.
Grocery delivery scheduled for tomorrow, ordered tonight. Cross your fingers, everyone, that deliveries or curbside pickup are better now. I don’t know if stores are open for in-store customer shopping where you all are, but there was no longer a note when I visited Kroger’s just now. Food and supplies I am out of, fresh produce, some oh-I-want-that items, hopefully to last a month, except milk and sodas. Just realized I forgot tomatoes for hamburgers or other. I spent more than I wanted to, but couldn’t get myself to do without, so next order will be sooner and smaller, likely. Still planning to make homemade enchiladas, but have to check the recipe again before I fix them, for sauce and beef or chicken filling.
Groceries got delivered, mostly. Good News / Bad News: My fridge and freezer are overstuffed. If I’d gotten all my order, it would not have fit. I _must_ go back to 2 or 3 week ordering to keep it reasonable. — Several items didn’t arrive, so I’ll be checking my receipt, but expect those weren’t charged. Effectively, I think I have meat for three weeks or so, but plenty more else. Odd, some of the items that were out or substituted, as if everyone is getting not-quite-full orders so they can service everyone. I did get the essentials, mostly, so I’m not mad.
I’m very pleased to see the conversation becoming lively again, with the ten-line rule. Alas, I have nothing much to contribute because I’m a retiree doing the social distancing thing.
I did just get Thieves” World Volume 1 for the Kindle for $1.99. Am I correct that CJ had a character somewhere in that series? It’s been a long time since I read any of them, and I’m looking forward to revisiting Sanctuary.
CJ joined the merry band in volume 3 (Shadows of Sanctuary) and had stories in most of the subsequent ACE volumes (and stories in the two TOR anthologies as well)
@Threadbender — I didn’t realize there is both a CJ and a CJ&Jane story in “Enemies of Fortune”. Thanks! I’ll have to find a copy now!
Those are all Thieves’ World stories? I’m not sure if I’ve ever read them, but oh, if any are available in Kindle ebooks, I’ll check. I would love to see the Merovingian Nights books in Kindle or other ebooks. I’d been reading in the first volume, back when things were so messed up after my grandmother had passed. I loved what I’d read of the first book, but set it down, and I’m not sure if it made it into storage. So I’ll look for another used copy.
Thanks, all three of you, for the great suggestion. For some reason, those sound just right.
Haha — Special Pals called my number by mistake instead of the vet’s office. I had said I’d given oral consent for the vet to give them the records, and the vet’s office had been waiting for OK from the vet herself. Then had a short chat about the new kitten. — Got a nice compliment from the lady at Special Pals; seems the vet’s people were all smiles, knew me well by now. Nice to know they think well of me. — Special Pals said Peppercorn and kittens are doing very well, and they have a 2 week waiting period before they can be adopted out. Sensible. I’m glad they’re doing fine and sure hope they get good homes, people who can handle Peppercorn’s aggressive streak and Unicorn’s bad habit of leg climbing.
I appreciate the 10-line rule. Some comments were too long to be interesting, and I’d honestly skip everything due to disinterest in certain threads. Looking forward to details on a virtual ShejiCon!
In breaking news, we now have hired someone to make closed-circle behave again and make more sense. It is proceeding apace.
Yay!
A-U History on the way?
Eeeexcellent *taps fingertips together*
Now that’s good to hear!
Closed-circle working again sounds good.
Another question: is the total disappearance of the time-limited edit-button on my comments here a deliberate choice?
I miss it, I make too many typos on my phone.
… And it’s back, on this comment. Thank you!
Hi – Good for you – Closed Circle is very important. Hiring someone to take care of it will free up certain people’s time to write – hint hint. Stay sane.
Jonathan up here in New Hampshire – warming up finally.
Very good, looking forward to when closed-circle will be up and running again, and to the A/U History piece that was planned.
BTW, I’ve never tried Zoom. I used Skype for a while but cancelled it. I’d try Zoom if there’s a virtual Shejicon in the future. 🙂
Love the new rule. Honestly I find commenting here a little intimidating sometimes as I loose the thread pretty easily in some of the more lengthy posts.
