It’s a very nice award. It recognizes a book that promotes individual freedom or the right to ‘vote with one’s feet’ when it comes to choosing your allies and your government. Intelligence and foresight matter. Which is something AR is about.

I love ALL the books. But ooh, the Fortress books; so near and dear to my heart; at the top of my favorites. I can and do re-read these every year, and they never disappoint. Tonight, after readmitting my husband to the hospital, I found myself turning to the series again, traveling with the characters through danger and heartstopping mystery with bravery beyond measure, for inspiration. This is how you measure book/series greatness.
Cathy, best wishes for your husband.
Oh, Cathy—courage and fortitude to you!
Thank you so much, Hanneke and Raesean; I am touched by your kindness! Husband was taken away by ambulance at 3am Thursday morning, extreme weakness, confusion. Highly elevated white blood cell counts, nothing else. He’s had a small unhealed bit of incision from his broken leg/ankle surgery, all else looks well healed, no other signs of trouble, yet that wound culture was positive for staph. Waiting on overdue deep bone dye scan; if that is okay he’ll be home tomorrow. Meanwhile daughter tangled with flower pot hiding nest of murderous wasps; stung 5 times on head; all is well there too thanks to the attentions of her personal medical team … paramedic husband on phone with grandson, administering copious quantities of ice packs and Benadryl; she says her hair may never be the same :). We’re ready for a new week, and I’m ready for new books; or more Fortress!
Don’t we all just hate it when there is nothing useful we can do? Sometimes deep inside a book is the very best place one can be.
Multiple owies! I sincerely hope your husband and daughter recover quickly and fully from their various medical insults. Those wasps….!
Cathy! I hope things go better for you.
Anyone get jolted by the earthquake in South Carolina/Virginia? Checked in with a couple of friends in the area; shaken but not stirred.
Thought I commented last night; maybe my post was too long, or … I don’t know what day it is any longer lol. Thank you HRHSpence, Chondrite, and Tommie. Husband came home last evening, tired and grumpy but doing better. All our moods were greatly boosted by a surprise: our daughter and grandson waiting for us. They hauled laundry, fixed a door, replaced porch light, changed sheets, and brought tacos … and a lot of LOVE. 3 hour drive each way for them, and she’s all recovered from the murder wasps :). Thanks all!
Seeing family and knowing that they are safe is a huge morale boost for everyone!
good to hear, Cathy. Sweet family.
Great to hear the positive outcome !
How is Jane these days — we haven’t heard from her for some time. And Lynn has completely dropped off the radar; her site is gone except for a placeholder template.
Apropos of nothing:
Everyone knows that if a thing is wrong when it is done to you, then it is wrong when it is done to someone else, even if you are the one doing it. The hard part for me to realize is that if a thing is wrong when it is done to someone else, it is also wrong when it is done to me.
But apparently we have new standards in America. Schoolyard bullying is now acceptable.
Only if you think yourself King….
What I dislike is when a person says it is wrong to do it to them, but it’s okay if they do it to someone else.
I’ve caught myself doing that.
Oh yeah, I’ve caught myself critiquing my spouse for doing something… then finding myself doing it too. I try to observe honesty and admit I just did that annoying thing too… but it is way easier to excuse my intentions than someone else’s “mistake.” 🤭
Given the nature of recent comments, one might say, “No news is good news.”
I can’t wait for the end of the month to change my costume! This one is SO uncomfortable.
Too funny, will it be a skeleton for October?
I have one, but it’s not contrasty enough on light backgrounds. Maybe “Wind in the Willows”? Or something else entirely, maybe just going “naked”. Gotta be something, I’m getting a crick in my neck.
WRONG, Wrong, wrong! “Legend of Sleepy Hollow”!
Y’ know, the worst thing about getting old is being like HAL. “My mind is going. I can feel it.”
I found an old CD of “Linux From Scratch” in the bottom of a tub at the Goodwill Outlet in 2004. I’d been playing with a demo version for a little while, so I began building it. Now I have versions of “Paul’s Own Distribution” for any generic PC from a 386 up to a modern multi-core 64-bit CPU. But 3 years ago I recognized I can’t do it any longer, can’t juggle and keep enough balls in the air.
How about ‘Penguinstein’?
or the Creature from the Dark Pengoon? Or an oil slick.

Long time with no new blog post. Is everybody ok?
CJ is either under the weather or at a convention somewhere. She’ll resurface and tell us a wonderful story. That’s how it usually is. If she’s under the weather, I hope she feels better soon.
I have an unhappy feeling that she’s fighting off something; I believe she said cons were off the table for a while last time she posted. We haven’t heard from Jane for a while either; I hope all is, if not well, at least adequate with them! As talkative as BCS can be, I’m a bit worried about him as well. He hasn’t responded to my e-mails, and has a hurricane or two headed his way…
I’m concerned about BCS, too. Please let us know if you hear back Chrondite.
Bother! You’re right about Marco and Laura. I can’t recall seeing such twitchy hurricane tracks. This morning they were both aimed near NOLA; now it looks like both will impact Texas.
Marco looks to go along the coast of Louisiana and east Texas, before sliding inland as a tropical depression. Laura looks to hit near the Louisiana-Texas line late Wednesday, before heading up the Mississippi valley.
I feel sorry for Louisiana and east Texas – they’re going to get a lot of rain this week.
Sorry for three replies in a row, it’s because I’ve been unable to login for a while.
I too have been worried about BCS for some weeks now, and have sent him some emails but didn’t get any reaction.
I’ve suggested to Ben that he might set up an email group with those of us who would like to keep hearing from him, if he doesn’t want to create a Facebook account (I don’t have one either).
With an email group he has people to talk with, without irritating others on this blog, and he already has email addresses for some of us.
Except apparently sometimes his yahoo email account doesn’t work very well. So maybe that’s why he’s not answering anyone’s mail, and why I’m mentioning it here this once, in case he sees it and can clear his mailbox.
I guess you’ve tried “ShinyFiction”?
I’m with you on FB. What they call “News” is more of the same as you’ve clicked before–no wonder Americans are being shoved into “silos”! Frankly, I can’t understand Zuk’s unexplainably naive belief that everything will be sweetness and light when people can communicate anonymously, and his refusal to accept common evidence. General nastiness and abuse has been recognized since the beginning.
Yes, it’s sure to be rough for BCS, but no more than for hundreds or thousands of the infirm, aged, or just downright poor and homeless in costal Texas, that should be deserving of concern. Texas, more than most states, assumes everyone is, is able to be, self-reliant. That said, I doubt any state meets the need that we have created, exists, only comes to our attention during disasters.
Since I ‘see’ BCS more frequently than anyone else in TX, he is just the ‘face’ I put on people in some difficulty from that area. After all, it is easier to sympathize with someone you know, rather than a random person.
This time last week, I was going off for a short break. My Brother, Mum, and I went to Fort William for a trip on the Steam Train to Mallaig. We also met up with my other two brothers, Sister-in-Law, and a Niece with her new baby, born at the Christmas/New Year Week. A two night Hotel Break, we went on a Cruise down through in the morning, and the Train trip in the afternoon. It was a nice little break for all of us, and a nice surprise for Mum.
This Morning, saw an article on the news that a local school, just a few hundred yards away from where we live, has a teacher and two pupils self isolated for Covid-19. We use this school for a voting station, but other than that, have no contact with it or its staff & pupils. Makes you think though, you really don’t know what’s going on in your neighbourhood.
Comment edit option disappeared, possibly as I accidentally double posted. Supposed to say Cruise down the Loch in the Morning, and Train trip in the Afternoon. This train is strongly associated with the Harry Potter Movies, and we saw a couple of it’s fans filming a fan vid segment after we got back.
Ah, the Hogwarts Express? Sounds fun; I do like trains. /Sheldon Cooper 😀
(I wrote that, and immediately heard it in his voice.)
I have assumed that CJ and Jane are both reasonably ok just busy. Both post on FB, CJ more often than Jane. CJ does engage in comments, so it’s not just posting interesting articles. Jane mentioned some hip problems. Toes crossed that she is well.
There have been some FB posts and photos from Jane about finally finishing house renovations, sorting, cleaning and disposing. I imagine that getting it all done before winter, plus writing (there is always writing) is taking up a fair amount of time.
It’s been ages since I posted here, it’s been a strange year for me with unexpected health problems, RONA, quarantine, (not as bad as one might think for an old introvert), and politics. Which I will not discuss except to say that it has more than doubled my anxiety quotient.
Even though I haven’t been posting I have enjoyed your comments.
I’m not on Facebook, and have some trouble when I try to find CJ or Jane on there. Searching on Facebook, when you aren’t a member, does not work well.
There appear to be multiple accounts for CJ, and none of the likely ones will let me see their recent posts.
Maybe they are restricted, but I’ve found with links to TinyKittens facebook pages, that if someone posts a link the I can generally see the linked page.
Could you or Aja Jin post a link to the “Recent posts” page for CJ and for Jane?
Even though I can’t talk on Facebook, I’d still like to see how they’re doing.
Yeah, seeing some posting on FB from CJ, and a bit from Jane. Hope Jane’s hip is getting better.
That might explain it. I don’t FB, and people on it regularly get accustomed to posting there rather than elsewhere. As long as the news is not bad.
