This house is well-insulated, a bennie of living in the north. It takes more time than that to drop us below 64 degrees in the house, and since we keep the winter day temperatures around 68 F, or 20 C, we’re pretty ok. Even during the 8 day blackout with no furnace action (the ignition is electric) we made do with a hunter’s indoor-capable propane stove (had to keep a window cracked) intermittently: we were able to keep the fish tanks at 61.8 by draping doors and windows and doing our living in the same room.
We re-lit it once, but we had problems with the fan motor, so that didn’t last. Turns out, however, that the thing fell within the 5 year warranty, and our only bill was labor. Yay! We finally have actual heat coming out of the vents, and the cats, instead of being furry balls or lying on our laps, are sleeping atop my bed on a fuzzy blanket, stretched out in comfort. We still hold to our 68 F but at least we have, like, a warm bathroom. Life is good. Our local HVAC people are good folks: they know our names when we call, they have our records, they service what they sell, and they’re prompt and sane. We got this furnace in 2013 (Carrier brand) and they assured us our AC portion was perfectly good, though we asked. I also appreciate a company that gives you an honest assessment of your stuff without trying to con you into something you don’t need.
So—we’re warm, we’re ok, the snow is forecast to continue until the weekend, lightly so, and we did not have a huge bill. 😉
@chondrite — Just by chance, did you try to call me today, Wednesday the 7th? I’ve got calls from an 808 number that WhitePages.com won’t identify beyond HI, USA, and I don’t think I have your phone number or you have mine. Not that I’d object. 🙂 I’m assuming it’s a spam call, but thought I should ask, in case.
Still no news from the recycler re my old iMac’s receipt. Maybe by the end of this week or early next week; it was mailed Monday.
Meanwhile, thanks to GreenWyvern’s nudge, I am starting a new font project as a test run. Might as well.
No, I didn’t try to call you, so it was likely to be some sort of spoof/spam. I have your phone number, but try not to call unless I have been directly invited; the time differential between HI and the mainland makes for wacky timing.
I use White Pages, too, though I usually Google `xxx-xxx-xxxx white pages’. The last time I did so, they wouldn’t give a name, but the satellite pic from Google was as obvious as CJ&Jane’s would be.
About wacky timing, try dealing with US, Japanese (slightly different), and Australian (reversed!) daylight savings times at once!
I never know what adjective to use for Veteran’s Day and such. Solemn? Retrospective? Well, a somber Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day to all.
Thanks, Chondrite; just making sure. I would’ve thought if you had called, you’d leave a message, but thought it best to check, just on the remote chance. 🙂
Hah, but the winner for oddest spam call goes to a cleaning company in Florida, who didn’t think to check the area of numbers they were calling to drum up business. You know, if a Florida-based cleaning company really would send out a crew to my house in Houston in 30 minutes or less, I would have een tempted. But I’d also want to look for that transporter pad or TARDIS, y’know? Hahaha.
The other winner was the central Texas rancher who mistakenly called my number to say a bull had gotten loose and was wandering the adjoining property. Thing was, I don’t own anything out there. I called the man and explained he’d reached the wrong number, so he could warn his neighbors again without anyone getting hurt or upset. He was apologetic. I told him I didn’t mind and hoped the bull and all were OK. I believe the word laconic would apply. 😀
No bull?
The bull had done this before. It was a known bull endeavor.
