And we thought we’d start with the waste-disposal cabinet (hides the trash)—which turns out, to our surprise, to have a motor. You knee the thing and it powers open. We’re on the phone with the company trying to figure are the slats on the bottom of the cabinets supposed to stay—no. They look like good wood to us, but they’re just shipping reinforcement.
Installation has sort of ground to a halt at cabinet #1, while we figure this out, but it’s going, at least! The color of the finish is exactly what we ordered, no variations; the colors we painted are great with the finish; and it doesn’t look now as if we have any problems with damage. Happy, happy.
YES!
Hope the hitch at cabinet #1 is a small one and that things will soon be smoothly moving right along.
@BCS — My cousin is an attorney in Houston who advocates for children in the foster care system. I mention this because one of her colleagues advocates for people trying to navigate the SS disability system. If you’re interested, tell me how to get in touch with you and I’ll aim you in that direction.
BCS: take WOL up on this offer to connect you with a Social Security Disability system navigator: doing it on your own is very, very slow and difficult. The government has started funding these navigators now to help. I knew a person here in the Boston area who was doing it until the funding ran out.
My cousin is funded by the gummint, state I think. I will forward your contact info to her, BCS, and she’ll pass it along to her colleague. With you not having a consistent source of transportation, having somebody who knows the ropes do the legwork for you will be a great help. They will also know what resources are available to you from all levels of government — city and state as well as national — and which and how many hoops you will need to jump through to get them.
Ok, now I’m getting a bit worried that BCS has not replied to WOL and my little thread here or been posting at all for the past week or so, unless I have missed a well-sequestered comment. I hope he is ok.
BCS, please provide an update on your wherewithal.
They say the sooth—my dad used to do this and all the rest of it (he worked for that agency) but the rules have gotten so complex and age has thinned the ranks of those who understand it from the ground up, so I’m glad to hear they’ve got specialists who can help regular citizens navigate the thing.
Make darned sure you get that first box in right: square, plumb, and at the right height. If it’s off a sixteenth, by the other end you’ll be off an inch. Nothing’ll fit right.
We have a four foot level. Scott’s got this monster one that is even ‘righter’. And the top of the adjacent cabinets’ join is real, real smooth. Jane has pix. I’ll try to get them in.
I am supremely envious of the trash disposal cabinet. Ours is manual, and I swear someone walks by and closes it every time I’m about to dash for it from across the kitchen with something raw and dripping.
