There are.
Please let one of them be the one in which the third alien race turns out to be a Chanur ship with a special crew selected by Ari 2 🙂
Isn’t that like, crossing two or three different universes? Wouldn’t that make all of existence implode? Did I just see a hint of TARDIS in my post? XD
Don’t cross the streams!
Okay, I’ll stop now…
No, no, no! There are several signs by which you know an author is nearing the end of his/her career. Foremost of which is a tendency to try to stitch together a narrative to integrate their entire oeuvre. Heinlein did this, using alternate universes to explain those of his worlds in which Neil Armstrong wasn’t the first man on the moon. It was excruciating. [Other symptoms are clearing out the bottom desk draw to see if any revenue could be generated from earlier rejects and unfinished odds and sods; items which were in the bottom drawer for a reason. Another symptom of past-it-ness is franchising good, established worlds to new authors. [This does not apply, of course, to worlds like Thieves World which were designed and intended to be community property]
So please resist any small temptation to encourage Hani to jet in to sort out a Situation! (Not that I think CJ would, having too much respect for her work)
Should’ve scene that one coming…. I’ll be going now. or am I back again? Temporal mechanics gives me a headache. … Temporal mechanics. Oh! No wonder he needs a sonic screwdriver! … Oh, gee, that was a reach. 😀
Good luck on the final scenes.
I wouldn’t mind a Chanur or a Union-Alliance book (or several)! But I think those are in a separae story-universe from Foreigner.
Something’s in the air. That’s the third time today I’ve run across the “crossing the streams” Ghostbusters line. Not that I’m complaining, mind you. 😀 (Hint: See Also: Action Movie Kid on YouTube.)
My headcanon says Phoenix was from Earth in the Union-Alliance universe, whatever universe it ended up in. And that Chanur is also in the Union-Alliance universe, but far enough away to not be interacting.
Early in the Foreigner series, I asked Our Favorite Author about universes and such, based on the differences between Jump drive (Alliance-Union, Chanur, Faded Sun), where trank or Samurai-level mental discipline is needed to stay sane, and Folded Space drive (Foreigner), where the ivy goes nuts and humans are functional, if at a somewhat lower level of mental clarity during transit.
At that point, CJ said that this was a universe to itself. Now, I suppose that still leaves the possibility of changing universes due to the ‘point error’ event that led to the ship’s departure from known space in _Foreigner_.
I recall you asking that question and her reply was as you stated. The “Foreigner” universe is not the same “universe” as A-U, or Faded Sun, and probably not the same as “Fortress”, either 😉
Wasn’t “Wave Without A Shore” one of these stories where a group of humans is now in an “alternate universe”?
Port Eternity?
Not to be a hard case, but will the new shorter book be sold at the same price?
Do I have a legitimate complaint?
I realize that it it Ms. Cherryh’s living and that she does not control the pricing – but with the price of E-Books going through the roof I do wonder.
the price is set by the publisher, and not usually based on the length of the book, but rather production costs, marketing, author payments, etc…….
@NosenDove, a serious question: does the length of the book have any impact on how well it is written, or whether or not you enjoy it? Presuming not… who cares?
Put another way, if you read a 100k-word story with an extra 20k words thrown in to meet an arbitrary size, does it improve the story? I bet rather the opposite!!
I get about 2.50 a hardback sold. Does that say how much of that cost is me?
So little of the total. Doesn’t seem right.
We just create it. Everybody else has to package it, move it, transport it….It’s always been like this. If they doubled our income, books would cost a couple of dollars more,
But there are now 3 scenes. Jane mentioned one I’d meant to put in and hadn’t. I now have 99% of it done, and STILL have 2 more to go.
Thank you, Jane!
And the length doesn’t matter. It’s quality – which you always deliver – not quantity.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Heh, even if it’s a few hundred words shy of 120,000, that still won’t affect physical page count by a huge amount. It will still be a thick paperback and thick hardbound. That is, it could be shorter, thinner, fewer pages, but not by so much that the publisher would change formats or prices. The publisher has a vested interest in a certain page count and printed format for both hard and soft covers. The ebook size has no such limits. How they charge there is likely on word count and how wildly the market is still fluctuating for how to sell ebooks. The authors (and the production people, editors, printers, etc.) really don’t get much. Judging from the price of paper and ink and printing equipment now…whew.
The prices I’ve seen for ebooks lately are really, really strange. From $2 to $5 even from established authors, but definitely from the self-published, on up to $12 to $18 from the big name publishing houses. And textbooks? Holy talking catfish! Gotta feel for college students today. — Not that what I’m seeing is any different from what others are seeing. The industry is still undergoing seismic upheaval.
So, CJ, is this book the last of the last trilogy of the Foreigner universe? or the second to the last?
and what will you write next? Hilfy flying to Eversnow? (please?)
I just told Crockett the status and he is excited! He is all caught up and greatly anticipating the next book!
I know it is impossible but a Chanur xover would be awesome, especially Ilisidi meeting Pyanfar. What a tea party that would be!
Oh my yes. A galaxy’s fate decided by a cup of tea.
And a Happy Halloween to all. DH and I are setting forth — in costume — for our annual corporate meeting. We will dine well, confirm the business is in business for another year, and enjoy the company of friends.
