We have a 4×20 area of floor laid, including 3 hours on the first row, which is always a bear!—and I am so sore I may spend the night in this recliner because it hurts less.

One of my friends had to remove a 30×30 swath of old linoleum before he could put down new laminate flooring. Prior to that, he had to have a plumber come out and dig a trench in the cement floor and replace a cast iron drain gone bad. He highly recommends both exercises for weight reduction, so you may have a silver lining to all this activity.
I have laid tile exactly one time in my experience. It was on a concrete underlayment, so that made a big difference. I used a laser line level to set my center line, and went from there. I’m sure that laminate would start out the same, but I’ve never attempted that. I have laminate flooring in my kitchen/dining room, but that was here when I bought the house – fortunately, it’s new flooring and professionally done, because I don’t believe I’d have been able to do it as well myself. But then, with Jane being somewhat of a perfectionist in her work, I’m sure it will be indistinguishable from a professional job.
Very pleased to read that you are OK. Thanks for the update. Toes crossed that the damage is not extensive. I understand some areas are still having problems with flooding.
Happy floor laying!
